Gamescom 2024 is upon us! Gamescom begins on Wednesday, August 21 through Sunday, August 25, and is stocked with a myriad of games, both to be demoed and revealed. Big name publishers and indie devs of all sorts will be in attendance. While dozens of games’ details will be expanded on at the event, here’s my top three games I’m looking forward to seeing more of!

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero

If you’ve played any Dragon Ball-related game, you that they really vary in quality by a wiiiiiiide margin. Breakers was very middling, Kakarot was a not-as-great 3D Legacy of Goku, though I appreciate the span of DLC.

However, Sparking Zero may as well be called Budokai Tenkaichi 4, as the third game was heralded as the pinnacle of Dragon Ball gaming (aside from FighterZ, which is a whole different caliber). Making a return back to the close-up, third-person, over-the-shoulder fighting style, Sparking Zero looks absolutely promising.

The art style looks clean and vibrant, the actual fighting has impact and weight behind it. Even better, the world destruction looks worthy to be called akin to Dragon Ball anime. Roster-wise, Budokai Tenkaichi 3 boasted 96 character and over 161 transformations; so far, over 70 characters have been revealed and still over two months to go to reveal more.

Sparking Zero looks to be a Dragonball fan’s dream come true, coming with Episode Battles spanning the entirety of Dragon Ball Z arcs through Dragon Ball Super. With what we know now, this may become one of the best Dragon Ball games we’ve had in a long, long time.

Monster Hunter Wilds

The Monster Hunter series used to be impenetrable for new players. However, with Monster Hunter World and soon, Minster Hunter Wilds, the game has never been more accessible to those wanting to dabble in some monster hunting.

Monster Hunter Wilds is looking to be another slam dunk for Capcom. The gameplay loop is simple:

  1. Hunt monsters
  2. Craft better gear
  3. Hunt more, stronger monsters
  4. Craft better gear

It’s incredibly satisfying, and with Wilds, the series introduces a new, player-friendly mechanic called Focus Mode. This new mechanic allows players to carefully aim attacks instead of generally hacking and slashing at a monster. Triggering this mode also highlights a monster’s weak points and wounds, a series staple gameplay mechanic. It works as the explanation for you being able to take down different behemoths. It’s all about strategery baby.

New and returning weapons make their appearances, Palicos return to assist with your hunts. It’s assumed that the cast of monsters will be various, including the already confirmed Rathalos.

As of March 2024, Monster Hunter: World sold over 20.1 million copies, making it the most successful entry in the franchise to date. My only hope: Wilds becomes wildly (ha) popular and dethrones it. Only time will tell, but I’m very much looking forward to this one.

Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred

While not a full game, this expansion is enough to change up Diablo 4 enough to essentially become a new game.

Vessel of Hatred is the newest expansion to Diablo 4, and it comes with lots of new content. First is a new class, the Spiritborn, who looks to be a hybrid of the Druid and Diablo 3’s Witch Doctor and Monk classes. Utilizing spectral animal summons, Spiritborn possesses a wealth of ranged and melee skills to carve a path through the demonic hordes.

Additionally, there’s a whole new region to explore, new paragon boards, mercenaries make a return, and even promising new skills for existing classes. New story content picks up immediately after the end of the base game story. It’ll follow Neyrelle, one of the Greater Evils – Mephisto – and a new jungle region to explore.

With so much content, and the expansion release riding on the high success of Season 4 of Diablo 4’s content, hopes are high for the new content.

Honorable Mentions

There’s just simply not enough time for one man to write about every single game coming to Gamescom 2024. I mean; there probably is, but it’s not this guy unfortunately.

However, if none of these are in your realm of gaming wants, here’s another short list to peak your interest too:

This is just a small handful of the games I’m looking forward to. More updates and live news can be found on the site’s Twitter page while Gamescom commences! Shoot us a message about what games you’re looking forward to! Happy Gaming!
